I know I have asked this question before and have received much speculation. I have a Z stamped on my 67GT500 Shelby VIN Tag. It seems to me that since Mr. Shelby is still around we would be able to get a definite answer as to why the Z is there. I am sure there is someone still around that actually stamped the VIN Tag. What are your thoughts??

Mr Shelby is getting old, and, might not have been in on the decision to mark the "Z" about anything. This Z thing has come up a few months back, so, you might have missed it. Do a search. Likely a legal dept thing.

Look at the tread I started on in the Shelby Automobiles, History and Related Topics. The thread is titled "67 Shelby vin numbers". Last post on 10-17-05. There were many good ideas. I think it was a check to show the headlights in the car (inboard or outboard) were legal in the state the car was about to be shipped to.
