I am trying to find out what wheels came on my 66 GT350 (#389) I understand that it could be 1 of 4 wheels: The silver painted steel wheel, the 10 spoke wheel, the five spoke magnum 500, or the 5 spoke cragar wheel. What is the difference between 65 and 66 wheels?
Re: Wondering what wheels it should have Registry shows #389 came with 15" steel wheels. Interesting because I thought only the holdover cars (first 250 IIRC) had 15" and then they switched over to 14" on the steel wheels.
Re: Wondering what wheels it should have Have you checked with SAAC what paper work they have on your car? If not, I recommend you to do so. They had both the order form from the dealer and the shipping invoice on my 65, 5S275. Have them framed now. Your car is early so my guess would be that it came with the 15" X 6" steel wheels and if it had the option wheels that would be the 15" X 6" Cragars. Same as 65's. By the way there were two types of magnum wheels available later in the year. Chrome and grey painted. I used to own 6S923 and it came with grey painted magnums. Texas Swede
Re: Wondering what wheels it should have I don't know if you Ford types had it the same way, but I know that the Shelby Dodges were not made in order according to number, and they just assigned numbers as they saw fit. That could be why he doesnt have the 14" steel wheels. jim
They are not always built in numerical sequence however the 1st 252 were left over from 65 and numbered 1-252 so they would have all been 15". I did some more research and apparently they changed from 15" to 14" between cars 253 and 400 so his could have had either.
Thanks for the input, I'm pretty sure I found the correct answer to be that the car came with 14 inch steel wheels. Apparently my father gave the steel wheels to my uncle for his stock car and got the Foresmost wheels that are now on the car. I think I'll bead blast these wheels and paint the centers black. I'll post pics when I git r done.
Well I finally found the answer I was looking for as far as what wheels came on my Dad's 66 GT350. I suspected steel wheels, but now have the proof. My fatheer managed to dig up this old photo. It wasn't long before my Dad gave up these steel wheels for some 5 spokes that are currently on the car. Thanks all, for the input.l
Hi, Were they 15" wheels like the registry says or 14" that you thought it was? Looks like 15" to me by the way they are filling out the wheel wells. Checked the registry and could not find one 66 prior or just after your car #398 with 14" wheels originally. Texas Swede
