All, I'm thinking of painting my Shelby. I want to put stripes over the
top. Are the dimensions the same for 67 Shelbys as they were for the
    earlier cars?

    Thanks Dave #2587

    Dave,

The dimensions are layed out in the back of Tony Branda's Catalog. Good
    Luck,
I hope you have a lot of patience!

That can be considered a trick question. No 67 Shelby came from Shelby with
the LeMans stripes like the 65/66. The Super Snake came from Shelby with a
unique stipe that was different then the 65/66 style. 99.999% of Ford
dealers used the 65/66 stripe dimensions when a stripe was requested. The
special deminsions that you need to do it correctly are in the Shelby
registry and in the back of Branda's catalog.Hope this helps. Bob G.

How do you think the old style dimensions would look
on one of the new Shelby's. I think the straight
stripes look odd and thought if I were to get a new
mustang or shelby I would use the old stripe
    dimensions.
    Any thoughts?

The new Shelby's stripes are not straight. They are also not paint. They are a pre-cut vinyl tape. A lot of arguments ensued at Ford on what the dimensions should have been sources inside of Ford have told me. If you have your stripes painted on after you take delivery of your car then they would be considered owner applied paint stripes would they not?

If you pay dealership to apply either paint or tape stripes on your car I suggest you get the price of the "dealer added" stripes written up as part of your purchase agreement or make sure they apply it before you take delivery of the car.

Personally, I don't see why you would want to deviate from the factory stripes unless you want a color that the factory doesn't offer. I think a red car with Gold striping would look pretty cool, myself.

Has any one looked at the striping on the new Shelbys from close up? If so what do you think of it?

I have seen them up close before release (back in February). All of us at the factory pointed out the stripe issue before production began. SVT was very responsive and realized it was a potential problem. As you know it comes in several pieces and must be applied by hand. My biggest concern was the way the stripes end up over the back end; in many pieces, it appears very choppy especially up close. Based upon my inspection, I ordered my car without stripes and don't regret it at all. My car is Vista blue with only side stripes (white) which are the GT500 stripes. As to the car, I love it. It is a bit tight in how it is set up so if you are on uneven roads (i.e. Michigan where I live) the ride can be choppy. However, I have no rattles at all. The fit and finish are good for a Ford production model. Under hard acceleration, there is considerable wheel hop which everyone knows about and I thing Ford will modify the control arm bushings soon and offer an update kit. I love the front end look; much better than a stock Mustang. The engine is absolutely awesome. I have not had it on the track yet because I want a few miles on her before I really get into it. Next year I will take it to Waterford and be able to report back.

    Hi all,

Just coming up on the respray of my Special Order Yellow KR. From what I can see, they did a fantastic job on the fiberglass, I can't wait! I did decide to go with the Lemans stripes, and was chatting with the guys at Mustang Ranch about it today - they recommended not going with the taper, but rather going with a straight stripe. I was told that the dealers had a hard time getting the stripes right, and in the end many applied the stripes without taper.

Any thoughts? I know the stripes are not "original", but then again neither are the 10-spokes I have on, but there is no way I am swapping back to hub caps! :-> I want the car to look as "possibly original" as it can - i.e. to look as it could have come straight from the dealer.

Dave, sounds like you're not far away from me (I'm in San Jose), we should compare notes...

    Regards,
    Chris.

It sounds like the Mustang ranch is unsure of their ability. I believe
they are misinformed on the Shelby lore of the day. If it is the same
Mustang Ranch that did a Russ Taylors 68 KR fastback car out of UT then
I would be concerned about any historical info they might offer or work
for that matter. There is a reason the stripes are tapered. If you ever
have seen one were the stripes are straight on that year and one that is
tapered you would know why the stripe was designed to be applied with
the taper. It is because the taper causes a optical illusion. As
strange as this sounds when they are painted with the taper they look
the same width through out the car and when the stripes are painted
straight they look like the stripes get narrower. If you can see one you
will understand. The ten spokes were a dealer add on option in most
cases. Only a handful have been documented to have gotten them from the
factory. Good luck with your decision. Bob G.

    Chris,

Just my opinion, but the stripes aren't designed for the shape of the '68's hood and front end design. (Wouldn't they clash with the blacked-out section at the back of the hood?...)

Past that, I agree with the others, the Mustang Ranch's contention most stripes were straight doesn't mean one should duplicate an awkward error. If your car was delivered with dealer-added stripes, design them to suit the design of the car, not the 65-6s, nor the 67s... again... just my opinion...

    ------------------------------------ Hi all,

    Regards,
    Chris.

All, I'm thinking of painting my Shelby. I want to put stripes over the
top. Are the dimensions the same for 67 Shelbys as they were for the
    earlier cars?

    Thanks Dave #2587

got to agree; I can't imagine my KR with stripes. I have a 66 with stripes that look great (i.e. meant for the car). I don't like stripes on the 67's either. Keep it original!

As a member of the old guys who remember Shelbys when they were new, I cannot recall seeing a 67 or 68 with Le Mans stripes back in the day. I have some old slides from SAAC meets in Redding and Downington, one shows a yellow 68 without stripes. Most 66's were delivered without the stripes and were later installed by the owners. I recall a restorer many years ago who started putting the stripes on 67s and 68s as his "trademark". How about it old Shelby guys, anybody else have these memories? Lets help the newbes.
