Hi, just wondering if all the Shelby Mustangs had 31 spline axle's or is it just the big block cars ?

    Ok, i will be more specific. Does a 67 GT350 have the same rear axles as a 67 GT500 and does a 68 GT350 have the same rear axles as a 68 GT500 ?

For the most part yes. The exceptions would be 68 GT 500 convertibles w/ AC and all 500 KRs which had 31 spline axles. The others had 28s

Now why did A/C make the Rear need 31 Splines??

    Re: Rear Axle

My 68 350 4 spd. has a 31 spline rear and it is original to the car. It has the tag and I've had the shafts out. Definately a 31 spline unit. I've heard of other 68 350s that got the big rears. Who knows why. Just like the 68 350 I looked at that had the big block shock tower reinforcements. Anything went back then. Come to think of it, all the cars I've seen with the big rear were 4spds. Huh.

    Re: Rear Axle

I've wondered that as well. The funny thing about it is the KR convertible auto w/ AC used an open rear unlike all the other KRs that had Traclok. All 68 500s had open rear whether it had 28 or 31 spline. The KR convertible 4 spd w/ AC had Traclok but not autos.

Chris, I've seen 350s with the 31 splines as well. It seems to be the 4 spds with the C8ZX A rear

All very interesting. My 68 GT350 Hertz has a Auto and has a 31 spline rear. I always wondered what the term " Heavy Duty Rear " meant in all the advertising material. Maybe they all should have received the 31 spline axles ?

    Re: Rear Axle

Is there any specific code on the build sheet to tell what it should be?

    Re: Rear Axle

The build sheet code translates to an axle code that denotes what rear it should have. It seems the C8ZX (A,G,M) rears are 31 spline while the more conventional WES codes are 28 splines. From the build sheets/charts I've seen 68 350 autos should have the WES U 28 spline rear (build sheet 935A) like the 500 auto/4spd wo AC but as we all know there are as many exceptions as rules.

    Re: Rear Axle

My axle code for my GT 350 states on my build sheet 4001A and it is a 4 speed car. What type of rear end is in mine 28 or 31?

    Thanks, JB

    Re: Rear Axle

    Here you go gents;
    8935A is a WES U 3.50 28 spline open rear
    4001A is a C8ZX A 3.89 31 spline open rear

    Re: Rear Axle

Thanks for the info for the rear end on my 4 speed car. Is it common for the rear ends to have a drain plug at the center section bottom facing down to the ground?

I'm not an expert, but thought all 1967 GT 350's had 28 spline axles.

As already mentioned I have seen them come with both. My 4-spd car is a 28 spline.
