Did 65's come from shelby with an outside rear view mirror? Where is it mounted so that it clears the wind wing? could you get one for the right side? Is this the right mirror?

    Hi,
What you have looks like a Talbot Jr.
which is what the Ford dealers used to put on the
65 Shelby. I have one on my 5S275. The place on
the left door varied with who put them on.
I have seen them sitting very far towards the front
and others behind the ventilation window.
In my opinion, they are quite useless for what they
were intended for but my door had a repo on there
and the holes were already made so I found a NOS
one and put on the car. Also have a NOS Talbot Sr.
in a Mercedes box which were used on some 427 Cobras
as well. Talbot mirrors were manufactured in W Berlin, Germany
and were very popular in the 60's on sport cars.

I've got these on both doors on my '67. Same stamping in the top surface. You're absolutely right about them being useless though - especially on the passenger door, which is kind of important here in England where we drive on the left (correct  ) side of the road!

There was a curved surface mirror (convex?).. that you could buy with them that makes them work better... especialy on the passenger side.

In the early 1980's I bought a number of these mirrors when the importer, Canon Industries was going out of business. The stamping on the top of all of them looks just like the one in your photo. The stamping on the one on my car, however looks slightly different. The letters are a little different, and it doesn't say "W Berlin" Just "Talbot and Co Berlin" it also does not have the "T" in the center.

So which one is correct?... the one on your car or the one in the picture.
I have put together both kinds from salvaged 60's sports car... given them away to friends with shelbys and friends with needy cars..

I have no idea which one would be considered correct. Since the mirrors were not factory installed, most likely the short answer would be either. Depending on when they started using the pictured logo, it is possible that the early stamping is too early. Inquiring minds want to know.

The correct drivers side mirror for both '65 & '66 Shelbys is the Ford Rotunda
Bullit mirror that was sourced from the Ford Dealers Accessory List. Some cars left Shelby American with these mirrors installed, but most got them
installed at the dealer. There was a template that came with the mirror to properly position it on the door.

I don't think that's correct. I was told that the Rotunda mirror wasn't available from Ford until mid 1965, that's unverified and I have never bothered to check it out. Most of the photos of these cars show them with the Talbot Jr mirror. I do know that SFM5S-155 had a chrome Raydot mirror installed on the front fender. I first saw that car in 1969 and it spent a lot of time parked in my shop next to CSX-2580 and SFM5026. My car, SFM5026 had a Talbot JR mirror. Most of the ones I have seen were stamped "Talbot & Co, W Berlin" reflecting the Berlin wall that divided the city. The one on my car says "Talbot & Co. Berlin" I have attempted to research when they changed but so far have gotten nowhere.
It is generally accepted that outside rear view mirrors for 1965 GT-350's were left to the dealers to contend with.

I know the Talbot Jr. mirrors were real popular with the sports car crowd
during that time, myself included. ( had them on my Corvair Monza ) I don't
believe they were offered by Shelby for the GT 350's, but possibly for the Cobras. I would tend to think they were owner installed, being as
popular as they were. The PR photos of the GT350's show the Rotunda
mirror. Again, who knows for sure? Another charming aspect of Shelbys.

    Hi again,
Just checked the mirror on my 65 and it says Talbot & Co
    W. Berlin on it. It's the Junior model. The Talbot Sr. I have says
Berlin on it without the W. for West. Maybe Talbot changed their
stamping to Berlin on the mirrors after the unification of East and West Germany, i.e. 1989.
I have seen very late 65 Shelby's with the Rotunda mirror
but am quite sure that most of the 65's with a dealer installed
mirror got the Talbot Jr. Rotunda was however used for the 66 models.
As far as I know, no 65 came from Shelby with a mirror mounted.

From my collection of magazine road tests of the then new 1965.. only "Sports Car Graphic" 5/65 ..shows a car with an outside rear view mirror. All the rest (that I have) car and driver, motor trend, motorcade (motorcade?) show a car with no outside mirror.
