Confusion over Shelbys

In the old days a Shelby was a Shelby. The Man made them, they were special and very few folks knew about them, hence exclusivity. I am confused. Carroll is putting his name on everything from 6 cylinders with Cobra II snakes to replicas of made up movie cars. Now Hertz is making GT H Shelbys with the old man's blessings. I really wanted an 07 GT 500 cause I mistakenly thought it was going to be a Shelby Mustang. WRONG With the dealers marking up these cars and there being so many different Shelbys, I am doing some rethink. All I really wanted was the ultimate factory hot rod Mustang. And there is talk of more special edition Mustangs coming down the line. I am thinking about a used 03 Cobra. You could have gotten one around $23,000 a couple of months ago and now they are around $27,000. I have run these at open track events and they are pure delightful to throw around. Evidently I am not the only one who wants a fast car from the factory and does not have to be first with the latest and greatest. With the horsepower folks are getting from these 4.6 supercharged babies, maybe I really don't need a new Shelby to go fast. A friend of mine says anything with more than 500 HP on the street is a waste anyway. A classic original Shelby and a newer factory hot rod. Can I be happy????????

  2. Here's my 2 cents on the current situation: It's not 1965 or 1969 and it
never will be again, period. Carroll is trying to make money just like
everyone else is, and he's trying to elimate anyone from marketing anything
related to him or his past projects. I see nothing wrong with that at all.
The new GT500 will be a Shelby as much as it possibly can be. If you want
the ultimate new/newer Mustang to drive home as is, this is the car to have,
reguardless of Carrolls' side projects and others to follow. The 07 GT500
will still have mystique because Carrolls' name is on it, and It is being
manufactured and sold in direct collaboration with Ford. Carrolls' other
projects do not have ties with Ford other than the GT H of which won't be
much more than a stock GT. If you are hoping this new GT500 will be sought
after in the same way that the originals are many years from now, I believe
you or anyone else is making a poor decision buying one for this purpose
alone. I want one because it is going to be a bad ass car, and want to drive
the hell out of it - that is why everyone should want one in my opinion.
Can you buy an older car, modify it and have a car that will run with the
new Shelby? Absolutely, and then some. 500HP is very realistic and easy to
acjieve in an 03 to 04 Cobra. If you want to save a little money and don't
mind putting some work into your car there is nothing wrong with that at
all. You just have to decide if you can live without a new Mustant that
    say's "SHELBY" on it.

I couldn't agree more! I just don't want to pay more than Ford says the car
should cost. My local dealer has one coming to my specs, don't know when, and
I'm his first call. However, I told him that I'm at MSRP, no more, and we
agreed that if he can get more for it (supposing that it's an early car- if late,
I'll be OK), he can sell to someone else and I'll wait for the frenzy to die
    down.

I have no interest in the other "Shelby" cars that seem to appear every few
months. I'm looking for as close a match to my '67 as I can get, maybe just
because I like the idea of having a new-old pair. Carroll can make all the
money he wants- doesn't bother me at all.

  4. the real Shelby mustangs are gone forever and will never return. all those
other made over old cars are nothing but fake posers and are not worthy of any
respect other than the performance they can deliver (fast is still fast no
matter the sticker you put on it). in my opinion there will never me another
Shelby again as the past is the past.
there will be saleens, which I belive to be the closest thing to a 'Shelby'
there is today because he takes the car and modifies it like Shelby did back
    then.
on the other hand, you have the cobra R. this is as pure as you will get as
ford did this for the real reason of going racing with a little advantage out
of the gate (like the 65 Shelby). the cobra R is a real car that has the
numbers to make it exclusive and will hold the value or go up.
then you have these new Shelbys coming out. I am not sure they are a 'real'
Shelby but they are a real ford mustang that has a Shelby connection so I may
consider them a Shelby tribute or Shelby edition car as I am sure that carol
did not really have any real engineering or design input into the car but
rather gave his nod of approval to the car ( and cashed a check). the car is
cool and it will be fast so those are all plusses. I think the car will hold its
value better than a new GT and eventually 20 or 30 years down the line when
our kids are restoring the cars, they will still be worth more than a mustang
GT of the same year. I would not buy the car thinking you are going to make
any real money on it but if you buy it and keep it you kids will be really
happy now and when the get in a bunch of years from now. I think in the future
you will see a whole bunch of low or no mile cars on display of at shows 20
years from now because you are going to have a bunch of people putting these
things away for the future or for their collection.
so in short my ranking is:
A#1) my 66 mustang GT convertible ( dont care about value as much as I love
my car, and it was mine from high school)
    1) 60s shelby, 60s cobra, 60s GT40, boss, cobra R.....
    2) any year saleen, or new Ford GT, or even the Roush cars
    3) 60s mustang V8 or GT or mach1 car ( the more options the better and
    convertible even better)
    4) 90s and newer special edition mustangs including the cobra, mach, new
    shelby
    5) all mustangs in general and even the cougars
    6) I will just rank all other cars here ( they have to go somewhere)
