    Hi Guys

1)Who can tell me the major difference between a 65 and a 66
COBRA intake manifold on the Shelbys?
    2)Who was the OEM?
3)What would be the price for an original?

    Thank you very much!

The obvious difference is the size of the COBRA lettering on the front. The 65 has what is termed the "small letters" vs the the 66 Shelby which has a larger lettering. Early 66Gt350's also came with the small letter but I'm not sure when they switched to the large letter. I'm sure the first 252 had the small letter since they were left over from 1965's.
I'm sure other owners should be able to provide info on which intake their 1966 gt-350's had. The Shelby Registry may also have the info you need.

    Hi Jerry,
The 66 intake had larger ports than the 65 type and I have
been told that the very late R-models got the later type.
I think Offenhauser casted the intakes.
Early GT350 intakes had no S1MS casted on the back runner.
Prices for originals goes for about $1000 for a small letter down to
$400-500 for a large letter S2MS or S7MS. If I were you and needed
    a COBRA intake I would go for a 66 type S2MS.
Finally, the small letter has the word COBRA casted on the passenger
side front runner whlie the big letter has a casted plate on the passenger
side front with the word COBRA.

There were also at least two different versions of the 66 manifold. One had the firing order cast on the rear flat pad while the other had it cast on the front #5 runner.

Hi S2MS, looks better than s2ms.... actually I think Cris knows of four variations of the S2MS intake then add in Dick's factory "drag" racing intake which may be the same as the R model intake for the last batch of R models made and it could be up to 5 versions. For the 1965 intake you have Dick's pre-production one, no casting numbered one, the Rmodel one, the production one with the part number, and possibly one other version, time to hold an intake manifold party and start photographing these for the web site. Thanks for coming out to the party yesterday, glad you didn't bring #1757, it would of caused a major distraction away from #284 and #282, you know sometimes you have to take the ugly ones to the prom too, don't tell Steve that. :lmao:

Hey there 5S284, yes I believe you are right about there being more than two street variations, those are the only two I can think of, I think the other variations involve different sizes of the casting numbers?. Next time I talk with Cris I'll ask him about it, he probably has all the different versions in his garage. Great party, sorry I missed all the action when the Tiger guys showed up.

Here's some pics of my original manifold from 6S1757:

I have a friend with a 289 Cobra. He took an Elelbrock Performer intake and had a machine shop mill off "Edelbrock" Next, he acquired a cast aluminum "Cobra" logo (I don't know where he go it from but I can find out) it was the same approximate size at the logo on the large letter intakes. Next, he had the shop mill a pocket in the intake that matched the cast logo. They inserted the logo and welded it in place a little grinding on the welds and glass beaded the whole thing.
What he ended up with was an intake that out performed the original "Cobra" intake. (The performer flows consideribly more air). If you know what you are looking at, you can tell the difference because the runners run the wrong way compared to the original. 90% of the people who look at it don't catch this. He did this so he could port match the aftermarket intake to his modified heads without messing with an expensive original intake. (He has 4)

Hmm, I think we have the same friend Bill. He showed me the pieces before having the work done, it did turn out well. Dave.

I just posted another thread on intake ID-ing. Please check this out:

    http://www.shelbyforums.com/forums/...g-gt350-gt500/6740-s2ms-intake-questions.html

Do you guys think I have one of the "Drag racing" or R-model intakes? Mine has blank PCV and temp sensor bosses, and of course "drag race" stamped underneath.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!
