I did some searches here on this site but didn't find what I was looking for so I have a question below. I haven't owned a 1967 GT500 in almost thirty years now and I can not remember what distinguishes an original aluminum 2-4V air cleaner set up. So, what identifies an original 1967 COBRA lettered top and base from the 1968 version and all the aftermarket versions sold by Bill Maier et al. since the mid 1970s? Thanks.
Although it is listed under a different part # the 67 and 68 tops are the same other than the wrinkle paint (note: recalled 68 tops and service replacements were drilled for center stud) There are several features that separate them from the repops, letter font/spacing/proportions, rectangular casting outline around letters and casting marks on bottom. The 67/68 bases are obviously different but again have very distinct differences from repops. Tim
Thanks Tim. I was thinking that the air cleaner on my first GT500 was sand cast but maybe it has been just too many years. Maybe it was the 3-2V 289 engine set up I had that had a sand cast filter housing? All the "COBRA" ones I have seen lately for sale are die cast. I have seen different versions of lettering, with one having the "R" very close to the "A" like the maker didn't plan the spacing well.
Here is all the info you are looking for just click on air cleaners. Good luck. http://www.nvsaac.com/shelbyparts/Shelby_tech_main.htm
