I have bought new Mustangs for my wifes birthday twice. First a 2001 Cobra and more recently a 2006 Mustang GT. Both 5-speeds.
I think I have some picture from when the Pony Drive came to Dearborn, Michigan in 89. I will have to do some digging.
I would say if you want Cobra center caps then get them. Just keep anything original you take off in case you want to replace them later.
Most of those sound like Shelby protecting his legacy not tarnishing it.
