Automobile icon wheels into museum Legendary Carroll Shelby to speak Jan. 19, concurrent with exhibit about him First published: Wednesday, December 29, 2004 SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Carroll Shelby, a legend in the automotive and sports car racing world, will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Tickets for Shelby's appearance are $50 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation, which funds heart transplants for indigent children around the world. The event is sponsored by the Upstate Ford Dealers. Automotive journalists Brock Yates and Ken Gross will moderate a discussion with Shelby about the highlights of his career. The Saratoga Automobile Museum currently is hosting an exhibition entitled, "Carroll Shelby: The Ford Connection." The exhibit, which runs through March 2005, includes vehicles built or directly influenced by Shelby, along with rare archival materials documenting his career. Numerous racing and performance-product programs, from the original Shelby Cobra to the Ford GT40, GT350, and GT500 Mustangs, highlight Shelby's career. Shelby has been a race driver, team manager and consultant various auto industry projects. His aluminum-bodied 289 and 427 Cobra models and the subsequent Shelby Mustangs he built for Ford made him a household name in the 1960s. He has been inducted into the International and the Michigan Motorsports Halls of Fame. He also was inducted into the Mustang Club of America's Hall of Fame. In 2002, he received the Kruse International Collector Car Hall of Fame Award and followed that in 2003 when he received the prestigious Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to the cars in the exhibit, the 2005 Mustang will be on display for the event as well as a planned showing of the exotic new GT 40.
