Hi, Going to my 1st SAAC in Utah this year and I have a few items I wanted signed by Carroll Shelby. Does he even do official signings at SAAC conventions or is it better to go through his Childrens Foundation for $100? Thanks, Tim
Historically...yes. In the recent past, I think only once he couldn't attend due to health reasons. Be advised that it is not like walking up to get a sig, though. The signing is organized...they sell just so many tickets for a session, and you queue up with your item(s) and your ticket. I also think there was a fee schedule, with $X for books, hats, etc and $Y for car parts....with X<Y
I went to saac31 in Virginia last year with car parts in hand, hoping for a signature, only to find out Shelby was not in attendance.
Carroll tries but cannot always be at the SAAC events. Ususally signatures are limited to one per person and the total number is up to how he feels. The donation is the same rate as at the Childrens Foundation: $100 for paper/book/poster and $200 for car part like a glove box. The Foundation does request additional funds for return postage. While it is nice to see the Man himself, there is no guarantee that he will be there or that you will be able to get a ticket for a signature. What I have done is take the item with me to the event. If unsuccessful, send it to CSCF for a signature.
I see that SAAC is now 4 days...is Saturday the main day for shows, races, swap meet? I guess what I am asking is should I plan on 2 days, 3 days or 4 days??? Would I be able to see everthing in one day (Saturday) or should I stick around for Friday thru Sunday?
If this your first convention I would make it Fri-Sun. There is so much to take in, the hundreds of cars, the track sessions, vintage races, car shows and concours displays, vendors, dinner, tech groups and all great people from all over to talk with. If you are concerned on getting a signature, check with the CS Childrens Foundation table first as to when tickets will be available and if Carroll is expected to do autographs. Ticket sale times are limited. Monday is primarily for the SVT group though there will still be a lot of SAAC action. Never leave too early on Sunday as there is a full schedule everyday.
Thanks for taking time to answer all my questions. I've got a couple more if you don't mind. When does the swap meet officially open...the schedule says "set-up" on Thursday and Friday morning....so, does that mean it opens Saturday morning? Just trying to figure out what day to go. Also, is there going to be a shuttle that runs from the Little American Hotel to the track? I know they have an airport shuttle every 20 mins, but wasn't sure if I needed to rent a car to get to the track.
There have never been any shuttles to track events at any conventions that I know of. You need to provide your own transportation. The swap meet vendors take awhile to set up in the morning but are usually ready by mid morning. Some are better prepared than others. Since they pay by day and space and come from all over the U.S., not just from town near the track, it worth checking out who is there each day. Few take personal checks, some accept credit cards (not all types), all enjoy cash.
