OK, So I've been an enthusiast fo a long time but never much for chat threads and blogs and the like... but I figured it's time... So, for starters, I've got a bet going with a very good friend of mine who is extemely knowledgeable about 68's. He has been working on my 65 and the question at hand is... Are the side stripes on a 65 Shelby painted on or decals?? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Tim,

Welcome to the forum, it's a great resource, and real nice folks.

The ones on mine were decals.

    Hi Tim,
From Wisconsin and good friend who is knowledgable about 68s but is restoring a 65? I'm thinking I have a good idea who that is.:) 65s used decals for the letters but stripes were hand painted. That is why they appear as 2 different colors.

Right, plus 65 stripes are wider than 66 and later all decal stripes so make sure you do not use the later stripe dimensions as a template.

What car # are you working on?
I found SFM 5 017 in Fond Du Lac a few years ago, took a few years to convince owner to sell it to me. Stripes are painted on 65's; GT 350 is a sticker.
There is also a stripe kit with a 65 part # on it that closely replicates the 65 style, but it would not be "factory" correct.

    Re: Virgin In WI

    Point of Clarification please,

Are the side stripes painted along the entire length with a GT350 Decal placed on top, or is the stripe section with GT350 a decal, while the rest of the side stripe is paint?

Entire stripe is painted, only the Letters "GT" and #'s "350" are "stickers"
Keep in mind this is 65 only, 66 and up side stripes and letters / #'s are stickers.

Okay, you got me interested in this GT350 side stripe question. What would be correct for an early '66 "crossover" car? You know - one of the first 252 that came from Ford as a '65 Mustang and was built into a '66 GT350 by Shelby American.

    Thanks.

SFM 6S001 and any car after that had "Tape" stripes.

The GT 350 designation was a 3M ScotchCal adhesive backed vinyl decal.
Original side stripes were painted on and thats the way they should be.

You can get the 1965 3M reproduced side stripe kit from Branda. Use the
GT350 decals and throw away the stripes. Be original!

On my 65 "clone" in order to do a semi authentic scheme with it I reversed the colors. Guardsman Blue car with Wembledon (sp) White stripes. Like the Mark Donohue 65 "R" model. I had some 3M vinyl "GT 350"'s made that are a dead ringer for the white color used on 65's and the correct size. after painting on the stripes the car was clearcoated ... and it looks great.
I still have a couple of them (GT 350's) left. If anyone wants to do this .. E-mail me.
I think the 65 rocker treatment looks much better than the 66.. Pete Brock was right!

The side stripes on the 65 Shelby were painted. The letters GT350 were decals. FYI the stripes were Guardsman Blue and the decals were a different color. They did not match. Also, the wide stripe was painted partially inside the door jamb, impossible to reproduce with a decal. The lower stripe was on the rocker. In 66 the stripes were decals, same as the 68, and were completely on the door and above the rocker.
