DEARBORN, Mich. – Feb. 7, 2013 – Sometimes, great cars can do great things without even moving.

Ford Motor Company and its 2013 Shelby GT500 and GT500 Cobra were the stars of the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction, Jan. 14-20, where hundreds of thousands of people visited the company’s display in Scottsdale, Ariz. As part of the company’s continued presence at the collector car auction, Ford raised $350,000 for charity through the sale of two unique Ford Shelby GT500s.
A total of $200,000 was raised for JDRF, the leading funder of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, through the sale of a one-of-one 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra during the auction weekend. The “Friends of Carroll Shelby” Tribute car, which was built in honor of the late Carroll Shelby, crossed the auction block on Saturday, Jan. 19.

“We built this car to honor one of the greatest icons in automotive and racing history,” said Jim Farley, executive vice president for Global Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford. “A piece of history, this Shelby will always symbolize the passion Carroll shared with fellow enthusiasts worldwide. We are thrilled that collectors thought enough of these cars to pay these kinds of sums, but we’re also happy that we can do some real good with the proceeds.”

The GT500 Cobra was unveiled during the 2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August, where the Shelby Cobra was the featured marque. Displaying the traditional Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes, the car features an incredible 850 horsepower generated by the Ford Racing 4.0-liter Whipple supercharged V8 engine. The car requires 13-inch-wide rear wheels wrapped in massive 345-section high-performance tires to give it a wide body appearance. Shelby American provided a specially designed hood, rear wide-body kit, Shelby Wilwood brakes and new 20x13-inch rear and 20x10-inch front wheels.

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra wasn’t the only charity vehicle that generated buzz during the auction. Ford also supported the sale of the one-of-a-kind 2013 Get Your Heart Racing Ford Shelby GT500. The sale of the car at auction generated $150,000 for the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute at Henry Ford Hospital. The GT500 was the creation of Ford designer Melvin Betancourt, a former cardiac patient who was treated at the institute.

Ford also supported the Hagerty / SPEED Fantasy Bid program by offering the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang HFB Special Edition as the official grand prize.

Ford Motor Company’s presence was significant across the international event, including its participation in the on-line Hagerty / SPEED Fantasy Bid program. Ford teamed with Hagerty and SPEED TV to offer an all-black, one-of-a-kind, 800+ horsepower 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 HFB Special Edition. The individual with the handle 911mama was the winner of the official grand prize, which was announced on Sunday, Jan. 20.

Barrett-Jackson official’s estimated more than 310,000 people visited the WestWorld Exhibition Center for the week long auction event.

Besides Ford’s on-line presence, the team also displayed the latest models for consumers to see in an exhibit on-site that was similar to the one at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A dyno with two Mustangs lined up allowed the public to compete for the best quarter mile times.

Outside, Ford set up an extensive “ride and drive” area where people could experience the new Ford Focus ST, Mustang GT, Boss 302, Shelby GT500 and other vehicles in a controlled environment. These consumer test drives encourage feedback and comparisons with other automakers.

Catch Ford’s Mustang enthusiast team at its next event, the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction, scheduled April 4-6, and the Formula Drift in Long Beach from April 12-13, 2013.
