More than 10,000 images that illustrate the history of Ford Motor Co. are being pulled out of the auto company’s extensive archives and offered for sale for the first time.

Hundreds of images of racing history, early and late models, personalities, and vintage signs and advertising are being added weekly with 10,000 included by the end of the year. The 5,000 already loaded can be found on a dedicated website, FordImages.com that Ford launched in January.

There are millions of photos contained within the roughly 16,000 boxes, 75 file cabinets and hundreds of CDs at Ford Archives in Dearborn, Mich., said Dean Weber, the archive’s manager.

“The entire world of Ford culture is here,” Weber said. “These images represent the very special place Ford has in not only American history but world history.”

The images are for sale in various sizes, on paper, canvas or even wooden signs, starting at $25 each. So far, the main customers have been Ford enthusiasts and dealers buying historic prints for their homes and businesses.

Weber and his team have been poring through the files to find the best images to offer, according to Ford. Included are portraits and photographs from press releases, events, factories, motorsports and product development.

The chosen images are digitally scanned and offered for sale on FordImages.com. More than 15,000 images have been identified in the past six months. One reason for compiling the images is to create less-fragile digital versions for safekeeping, Weber said.

One of the most popular sellers so far has been a reprint of the ad that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1925 titled “Opening the Highways to All Mankind.” Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally cited the ad at the 2011 North American International Auto Show.
