Shelby to be honored at Riverside Legends event

Cobras -- of the automotive breed -- are invading the Inland area for next weekend's tribute to Carroll Shelby.

Shelby, designer of the Ford Cobra and Sports Illustrated driver of the year for 1957, will be in attendance at Legends of Riverside II, Friday through March 28, as will last year's honoree, Dan Gurney.

It takes place at Riverside International Automotive Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the memory of Riverside International Speedway.

The museum is having vehicles brought in for the event, including Cobras with racing history, said museum director Bruce Ward. One Cobra 427 is worth $5 million to $10 million, he said.

More flashy cars will come in Thursday, Ward said. Some will be on display after Legends weekend.

More than 50 drivers and racing personalities have confirmed attendance. They range from Cannonball Run founder Brock Yates to Disney child star Tim Considine (Spin of "Spin and Marty") and Linda Vaughn, "First Lady of Drag Racing."

Shelby and Gurney will participate in a panel discussion Saturday, Ward said.

Other sessions will focus on the Canadian-American Challenge Cup and the 1960 Los Angeles Times-Mirror Grand Prix at Riverside, in which Shelby came in fifth.

Legends includes a film festival, a mixture of mainstream features such as 1974's "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" and more specialized documentaries, with topics such as lawnmower racing.

Legends II picked up a sponsor in Citizens Business Bank, museum president and co-founder Douglas Magnon announced this week in a news release.

Legends strives for informality and limits attendance to around 150 so that people will have face time with the drivers. Tickets are $199, and some were still available at press time, according to Ward.

He said one of his favorite moments at the first Legends was near the end on Sunday when drivers sat around swapping memories passing the microphone in a free-flowing conversation.
