[Shelbymustang] Fw: Convertible rear glass

Hi there Bob and all,

My convertible top guy says the only way to raise and lower the top on a glass window mustang is to unzip first ( the convertible TOP, wise guy!). Have found this adds years to the window seam, as there is no "top tugging' with your top motor.

Ron and list members , For concours information the original two piece glass convert rear windows were made by CORNING and date coded. In the early 70's PPG won the contracted to make a thin strong cheap glass for the back windows on Ford cars. If you have a original Corning glass it is worth saving . Ed Meyer has found someone to repair the concours correct corning glass. Even on brand new replacement 2 piece rear glass windows most auto upholstery companys wil not gaurentee that the seam will not split after 2 or three cycles of putting the top up or down that is why so many have gone with the cheaper clear vinyl rear window. Any repair is a temporary fix on the seams . Mustang monthly did a article a few years back on how to repair. I have tried it with mixed results. It is my experience that it is best to replace rather then repair a two piece glass window unless it is for show and you are not putting the top up and down a lot. Bob G.

Thanks Dan. I tried to unzip the window and it is a beggar to get it zipped back up again. The fact that I am well over 6' tall and also I haven't been in the back seat of a convertible......................., so it is a tight squeeze. Anyhow, I think I just might go back to plastic.

I saved the original rear window from my 69 and run a repo folding window
which I have no trouble with and it is over 10 years old.
the plastic window is so annoying that when the one in the 66 started to get
hard to see through I just removed it and never bothered to replace it

hmmm....very interesting, i have never heard this and have been around these
old ragtops for a long long time. A retro aftermarket folding 2 piece rear
glass window is in my 65 modified Mustang convertible. the seam is cracked
( not the glass, but just the hinge type material ) for about 5 inches on
one side- has been for 10 yrs now, never getting any worse . I have wondered
about unzipping the window before lowering the top hoping to prolong the
hinge life and not have it worsen but never heard anyone say it could be
done without inflicting more damage. Bill, motown
