Sagging Roof Liner

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on replacing the headliner in my 1987 Shelby Z. It is starting to sag now and I would like to know how hard it is to fix and or replace with new materials. My interior color is the twilight blue option (not the most popular color from that year) and I would like to know who I should contact for help? Secondly is anyone aware of any Shelby "steering wheels" for sale that may be for sale and are in decent shape? I have not seen any in a while here or on the sdac mailing list.

I had the same problem with my blue Shelby Z. I removed the headliner from the car and took it to a local auto upholstery shop. They found a fabric that was a perfect match and glued it to the headliner board. I installed it back into the car and it looks like new.

Sounds good there is a guy in my town that specializes in this sort of thing. Do you think they can re-use my original liner? It is in very good shape outside of the sagging part. But if they find a match I guess there will be no point in trying to glue back the orignal one. Thanks for the quick response.

My upholstry guy said it was much easier to use new material, the added cost was not that much. the total price was about $75.00 for the cloth and labor gluing it on -Patrick

For the frugal minded, how difficult would it be to diy? I mean pop out the liner, peel off the old fabric, find a match, spray adhesive fabric to board, pop back in . . . am I missing something? $75 to pay them, or (crass estimate) $20 bucks and a little patience.

Might be worth a try, although there is a very thin layer of padding between the cloth and board thats usually disintigrated away on cars this age. Also the thin, flimsy cloth is not easy to work with.

I have paid a professional to do my old GLH-S and I did my CSX myself. The advantage of having a professional do the job is that it gets done! I took the headliner out of the CSX and never got around to putting it together until the wee hours before a car show.

It is not too difficult to do it yourself. The upholsterer that did my GLH-S gave me excellent advice and pointers on how to go about it. There is a How-To website that does a pretty good job explaining the procedure.

Cost to do it myself was more like $45. But, I bought my materials from the upholstery shop. If you shopped at some place like Jo-Ann fabrics, I am sure you could get the materials much cheaper.

I think I had like $70 in mine, and it is a T-top car, turned out way better than the ones I have done.

Well thanks to all that replied to my original post on the sagging roof liner. Thanks for all of the your good advice and pointers. So I brought it to the shop and got it all done. I also had them put new material on the sun visors and over the rear speakers all this for 80 bucks. Not to bad. It looks great and I am happy with the job. Much better then I could have done. Now I will be putting it back in tomorrow.
