On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

Probably this one was discussed before but don't know how to find it.
I have a picture from the Sixties, a front 3/4 view of a Comp 427 with extra small gas cap on right front fender that I believe is signifying dry sump car. This one also has racing windscreen and through the body 4-into-1 sidepipes and extra wide wheels in back. My question is: does anyone know what team this car was prepared for because usually it isn't until a team gets the car that they stripe it their sponsor's colors. Yet this car was shot at Shelby American before delivery to any team. Since the picture is black and white I am going to take a wild guess and say the stripe is green, white and red, all of them together about 6" wide. In a way it's similar to the stripe on the Ferrari 250GTO when it made its debut at the Ferrari factory. I wonder if this was one of two Cobra 427s sent to Europe to race by a private team? Sorry I don't have the technology to scan/upload the photo.

Re: On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

If im not mistaken...this must be the car you were talking about....
http://www.petersen.org/default.cfm?...ID=264&index=1
As for the dry sump system....4 cars had it.
Also, when one aquired a comp 427 from the factory..they were mailed an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet which had an outline of the comp cars and questions/blank lines on the bottom so that the customer could have any paint scheme they wanted so long as they could draw it and describe it as thoroughly as possible.
Really quite cool......
I had a chance to buy one of those sheets off ebay a long time ago....the seller and i had never seen another one and i did not even know they existed. Anyway..i passed....couldnt regret it more!
Best Regards,
Vern

Re: On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

The car you are speaking of is probably CSX3016, Lowther-Grossman, dressed up for Sebring in 1966. I have color shots and the stripes are red, white and blue...blue on the drivers side.

Vern's pic is a modern shot of CSX3022, which is dressed up like the old pic of CSX3016.

Re: On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

Another possibility would be: CSX3020, the Tom Payne car. It was red with
a thin Blue stripe on the drivers side, Red in the middle and White on the
passengers side, all together about 6 inches wide. Tom usually had the #13
on the car. It had the dry-sump oil system ( small reservoir cap on front
fender ) racing windshield, 4 into 1 exhaust system.

I compared pictures and it looks like the car...

except in the original shot from the Sixties the wheels are dull painted mags and the tires are probably Goodyear but the lettering was much smaller. Goodyear Eagles hadn't been invented yet. It will be interesting to find out if this was
Tom Payne's car, I identify him more with the 289 I saw him race with the huge ugly "squirrel cage" roll bar.

Erik:Do you have that same shot little further back?

Great shot, but you were in too tight. Do you have one with the whole car?
If so please contact me, might want to make a painting of it.

Re: On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

The Bob Grossman, Tom Payne and the George Eaton photos are not mine they were taken by two different photographers. The Grossman photo is from the Fotki.com website under the Sebring 1966 section and the Tom Payne/George Eaton photos are from the Autocourse.ca website in the 1966/1967 photo section. I provided the above photos to clarify the initial post. If you check both of these websites you'll notice a plethera of vintage photos. Happy Holidays and enjoy the vintage photos.

Re: On the Comp 427 with three color stripe

its my understanding that the "3016" car in the You-Tube video isn't the real 3016 that was raced by Bob Grossman. The You-Tube car was initially identified as 3106 many years ago, then when the real 3106 surfaced, the You-Tube car was re-identified as 3016. SAAC is aware of this situation, and the next SAAC registry will have updated information.
