Mustang II Cobra ad featuring Shelby

I bought (ebay) an ad for the Mustang II (Pinto-based?) car that features a picture of Shelby down in the corner and the back of a Hertz Shelby somewhere else in the ad, labeling it a "COBRA" though I believe in '66 Ford hadn't yet used the name COBRA on a Shelby Mustang. Anyhow I was wondering if anyone knows if Shelby was on the payroll of Ford as a spokesman during the time they were selling the Mustang II Cobra and later King Cobra version or was this all done while he was off in Africa? I guess I could track down Jim Wangers who owned Motortown the company that thought up and built the Mustang II Cobras--he has his own little car museum near San Diego. Wangers is famous for thinking up the Pontiac GTO and is generally known as "Mr. Pontiac"
