In case the fine British magazine Octane is not sold at your local newsstand, I will clue you in that Carroll Shelby is now a contributor with a full page column. The magazine is called Octane and it comes from England. Saw it at Barnes and Noble. Very posh magazine more intellectual than American car magazines, with a good sense of history. Shelby writes a full page column. What is interesting is that he tells his column to the son of John Edgar, one of Shelby's sponsors in the Fifties, who is a writer in his own right. John Edgar being a one time sponsor when Shelby was a driver. The first column is pretty good, and he sounds sharp. The columns sound just like Shelby talking, and are fun to read. The picture is one about 50 years old, from back when Shelby was driving. I think it was the September issue with a Bugatti Veyron on the cover. Please let us know if he has another article in October. We never saw the column he supposedly wrote for Sports Car Graphic in '62 so glad we found his column this time, right next to Jay Leno's column. The magazine is available at Autobooks/Aerobooks in Burbank,CA a store that has a website if you want to order it by mail.

Re: Shelby columnist in British magazine

Just picked up a copy. You are right, it reads and sounds like good ol 'Shel, especially his remark about the Vanity Fair interview and his races in the 1950's. Can't wait for his future article to "set the record straight..." about a number of stories about him, his races and his cars.

Re: Shelby columnist in British magazine

The Vanity Fair article is the ultimate profile in my book so far because Vanity Fair pays up to $4000 a story (about four times what Car & Driver pays for one page) so that allows the author to do a lot of research. I will have to look up his name, I don't think he is a regular car writer, which probably freed him from worrying about if he would jeopardize his next test car.
Anybody who missed it, that's the July 06 Vanity Fair, yes the magazine your wife subscribes to...

Catch Octane at your newsstand

Octane is a fine British magazine, slick paper, I think it costs about $9 each copy in LA .Shelby has been a columinist for some time now, ghost written or dictated to William Edgar, the son of Shelby's famous sponsor John Edgar. In the latest installment, Shelby talks about old time racing in the Fifties. Sometimes he promotes the new product too much for me --I would rather read about his driving career but anyway it's an interesting mix because William Edgar was there when it all happened, though he must have been about ten tagging along with dad when Shel drove his old man's Ferraris and maseratis. I hope they do enough columns to do a book, they need to do about 100 more at least...

Re: Catch Octane at your newsstand

That is a great one page read. That issue is the first time I bought Octane. Good magazine.
