King Cobra --what was the gearbox
I always thought it was a type 37 Colotti 4-speed as in the '64 Ford GT but a website I saw today by Chuck Brandt said the modified Cooper Monaco's had BMC-Huffaker transaxles. The same website later mentions McKee transaxles using Borg Warner T-10 innards. Any clue?
Also Chuck said there ended up being 8 King Cobras built, but I only remember the Shelby team fielding 3. Maybe they had others in reserve. |

Was the Huffaker a 4-speed or 5-speed, synchromesh?
I only vaguely remember the name Huffaker. Did he work with McKee as well (McKee built mid engined Can Am type cars). Also I guess they were 4-speeds, 5 speeds being more of a 1965 development. Were they synchromesh? I heard Carroll Smith say the ZF 5-speed used in the GT40 "had no business being in a race car because it was synchromesh." I thought synchromesh was a good thing but apparently he felt it was just more things in the gearbox to break.
