Re: Hi from Mexico
That is a very interesting serial number. Do you have a picture of the serial number "vin" plate? Also more pictures of the car would be appreciated.

Hi, What I would like to know, is if the 1964 1/2 GT350 -R's VIN number were hand printed or marked ? Im really sorry for being so late in my reply and I will really appreciate if you can help me with this. It is very important for me. Thanks Javier. |

Re: Hi from Mexico
That vin tag is a fake/reproduction. It says Shelby America instead of Shelby American. That alone does not mean it is not a Shelby however, I believe this vin number is accounted for and being restored as we speak.

Re: Hi from Mexico
Not sure why you have two different cars in the photos you posted. I noticed the wheels on the yellow car looking like the "R" model Torq thrust but the centers appear different ... maybe the Ansen version wheel instead of American?

Re: Hi from Mexico
Do not worry , you did not burst any bubble, I just want to know why this numbers appear in the invoice when the car was bought in USA , and all so in the Mexican automobile register. Thanks for your help, the number that appears in a plaque (not original )is SR002 and the year is 1964

In the US they considered Mustangs 64 1/2
I know there were some Mustangs built in '64 and shipped to Europe where they were rally cars. But they were all notchbacks. The 2-plus -2 fastback is considered a 1965 1/2 model. The numbers stamped on your id. plate look amateurish. If you bought this in the US the FBI might help you prosecute whoever faked this as a Shelby. They take messing with serial numbers quite seriously...

The guy with the GT350 site has the answer
There is a guy who has a site devoted solely to the GT350, and especially to the early cars. I don't know the site address but somebody here will know it. In that site, I recall it said something like they had made the first few cars which we would call pre-production prototypes and then decided , well, now that we have more than one they have to have numbers and they went back and began making number tags for them. If you can send this guy a better close up shot of your Shelby id tag he can tell you if the style of the tag matches that of the other early cars, especially the first five. And I also think the first five were R-models which would mean no front or rear bumpers, double size gas tanks, aluminum side window frames with plexiglass windows, no rear 3/4 windows, etc. so if yours came with street equipment, that's unlikely since most R models stayed with their original equipment.
Also in the Shelby club Register it might have the Ford SN for the cars in addition to the Shelby serial number because every Shelby was a Ford Mustang when it left the Ford factory, before it reached the Shelby factory. |

Once you get the VIN number....
Once you get the Ford i.d. number for the chassis, you can contact
ponysite.de in Germany, they ran a story on early Mustangs (built in '64) and may be able to tell you when the car was made. Also you can contact the Mustang Club of America and see if they have a serial number expert in the '64 1/2 to '65 model years. And there's always Lance Coren, an appraiser in Prather, CA who is familiar with Shelbys (having owned half a Cobra restoration shop). You might be able to work out a deal where you check out a car in Mexico for him while he traces your serial number. |
