I don't have a Shelby, but I do have Doug Thorley Tri-Y's (love 'em). Right now they're on a coupe with power steering, and I had to use an extended bracket for the power steering ram, but when they were on my fastback which didn't have power steering, they had no issues.
Since you have a Shelby, you probably have longer pitman and idler arms than my fastback, so that may be your problem. Have you considered ordering a set of Tri-Y's from Branda?
As far as the side exhaust, I run 2 1/2" pipes with a conventional cross pipe (not an X design) to glasspacks and it dumps out the side in front of the back tires. It's louder than out the back, especially when there are tall buildings or concrete road barriers on each side, but it's not deafening... it's music, sweet music.
