Independent rear suspension

General question:

Back in 03 I was looking at a cobra SVT boasting a supercharged 4.6 delivering 390 hp. It was linked to an independent rear suspension that looked like a milestone for the Mustang brand. When looking at the 07 GT500's one of the first things I noticed was the solid rear axel, along with allot of colorful metalwork, etc. My question is what was the result of the IRS, did it handle better and why was it dropped?

Thanks,

Mambo

Re: Independent rear suspension

The independent rear suspension was prone to breaking on modified Cobras, also it weighed and cost alot.

Re: Independent rear suspension

The IRS was great for Road Racing (after changing to the better Drive Axles) and it sucked for Drag Racing. I know of many owners who prefer to Drag Race have changed over to a Solid Axle.

Re: Independent rear suspension

A lot of people ask that same question. As mentioned above, the IRS does better in road racing. If you are a super driver and you drive at a track you can shave "some" time off your lap times. For everyday driving you wouldn't really notice the diff. until it came time to pay for it. How would everyone like to pay say 3-5 G more for the IRS? Plus as mentioned it doesn't perform well in drag racing. Ford did the testing and found out for the extra cost the benefit wouldn't be worth it for the average buyer.

another question

Has anyone experienced any problems with the windows on their new mustang? The passenger auto-shut is not operating correctly as it drops down when the door opens, but does not go up the 1/4 inch when the door closes. Any suggestions besides taking it to the dealer?

Thanks,

Mambo

I had this happed to mine. Grab your owners manual. It tells you how to reset the auto-shut feature. It is easy and takes just a few minutes.
