Clean-up of '67 taillight frames

Can anyone suggest a process for cleaning up '67 aluminum tailight frames that are fairly worn? Steel wool, wet sand?

Thanks,

Jerry

Re: Clean-up of '67 taillight frames

Jerry,

Which style of frame do you have, the ones with the studs or the one with the holes? A word of warning for the ones with the holes, be very careful with them. If the screws are rusted and stuck in the holes, the frames can break at the holes, especially the middle set. You'll the be faced with finding someone capable of welding them back together. Not an easy task. I don't have a solution except for soaking in penetrating oil before attempting to remove the screws.

Re: Clean-up of '67 taillight frames

Roy,
I have the style with holes in them. Good news is they are each held on by two or threee bolts and none of them are the ones in the middle. Bad news is the ones in place are rusted very badly. The car has been sitting for the past 25 or so years.

The frames themselves are somewhat pitted so I dont think any type of liquid polish is gonna work. Looking for something more agressive once I can remove them.

Your car looks familiar....was it ever in Florham Park area or Lansdale under the lights show?

Jerry,

I used to go to NJ SAAC meetings in Florham Park when they were active twenty years ago or so. And I try to make the "Festival Under the Lights" in Lansdale show every year. I'm planning on being there this year too. If you're going to be there, come by and introduce yourself.
