Re: 67 Shelby rims
The first thing to look for is how the valve stem "sits", among other things - and the last post is correct - not original but very nice.
There are a great many cars out there with this very wheel - I even see some who use some kind of washer to make that indent look better. Mike

Re: 67 Shelby rims
I'm glad that you can tell from such a low resolution, poor quality picture. So should i tell the guy i bought them off of that his original gt350, that was unfortunately wrecked from the rear, had knock off parts on it?

Re: 67 Shelby rims
As a concours judge for Shelby's with several of the Shelby judging venues I concur with the others that have replied ,that they are absolutely correct in their observation that the wheels are a later reproduction. The resolution was more then adequate to observe the counter sunk valve stem hole that is a dead giveaway of this later style. As far as wanting a opinion on whether you should tell the person you bought them from that they are not original assemblyline wheels my answer is - only if you want him to feel bad. When a person wants to sell something on this forum ,the SAAC forum or any of the other Ford forums for that matter it is only natural that members would want to bring the correct information to your attention as well as to any prospective member buyer. Please take the information presented here in the positive, well intentioned way it was intended . The very best of luck selling your wheels

Re: 67 Shelby rims
This is the problem with forums... I can't tell if you're being genuine or sarcastic... either way, the way these gentlemen were able to tell from the picture you posted (or at least one way) is that the valve stem is in the wrong position. Your picture is more than clear enough in that regard.

Re: 67 Shelby rims
The comments on the wheel are well intentioned, not that i know anything about this wheel. Just a reminder to keep things clean.

Re: 67 Shelby rims
The spoke is narrower near the tire and wider by the center hub. The later issued wheels do not have tapered spokes. If you look at the 72Mach1 picture, the spoke is the same width. There are many variations of this wheel, because they were manufactured over 40 years by different suppliers. He didn't say what year his friend's car was, but the reality is very few 67/68 Shelbys ever had aluminum 10 spokes from the factory.

Re: 67 Shelby rims
I always thought mine were original (produced in late 60's) rims...now i will throw mine up for the experts to take a look. If they are repros you might hear me scream bc the $$$ i spent to have them restored. And i love how you guys pull out your credentials to qualify your statements. No need...when it comes to Shelby's the buck stops with Tim, Bob and the Coralsnake.

Your pictures are tough to tell. I can't quite make out where the valve stem is located, is it between the spokes or on the outer rim? If it is on the outer rim does it have a recess cut that the stem drops into? I can tell you from the pic that they are either originals or the 2nd gen ones. Even if they are the 2nd gen ones they have good value, I sold a set last fall for 3K. |

Re: 67 Shelby rims
Great photo John!
I've always been a fan of lime green and it looks good with those trees in the background. Looks like your wheels are tapered, so I guess that's one good indication. Randall

Re: 1967 Shelby rims
"All men die but not all men truly live" and i would like to believe "Men follow courage"
And here is a better pix of the rims. The stem is located on the outer rim. And the spokes have a nice taper. These pix were from before i got them redone. I sent them to a place that put them on a CNC and took off 1/4 of a millimeter all the way around to make them look brand new. Thanks Randal. I really love the lime green without stripes. The color has grown on me and even more so since the less Shelby's i see sporting the lime green. So many have been repainted "better colors" that it makes it like it just drove out of the 60's. That and the full alum 490 with 5 speed makes it an absolute monster.
