Help with 1967 GT500 purchase

Hi All,

I'm from Australia and a 1967 GT500 has come on the market.

I am not sure if it is a "legit" 1967 GT500 and would like some advice on what to look for and check.

Here is the website for the sale page, from the pictures and description it looks really good.

What are you thoughts?

This is NOT a shelby. This car is a dressed up 67 mustang made to look like an "Eleanor". "Eleanor" is a car designed and built as a movie car for the movie "Gone In Sixty Seconds" starring Nick Cage. In the movie the car was supposed to be a Shelby but was more of Hollywood's interpretation of what a Shelby could look like. The car was such a hit many people started copying and selling the kits to create an "Eleanor". One company, Unique Performance, was licensed by Shelby to create these cars. They are now either in jail or on the run in Mexico. So to answer your question this is NOT a Shelby just a 67 mustang with a body kit. Check Ebay i am sure you can find many of these cars for sale at a price, i think, competitive (i dont know the Aussy to America exchange rate) to this car.

Here's one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-...em160206367271

And another:

Good luck!

Sorry mate, that first Eleanor you found was a sorry example of a mock up Shelby and an even worse Eleanor, Id give them about 15K because you'd have to spend another 20k + just trying to make that car look decent.

Yep so much wrong with that Eleanor it's not funny. First off wrong colour (if he was trying to be exact) wrong wheels, wrong lights, wrong mirrors, wrong side stripes, wrong fender emblem, horrible exhaust, wrong fuel cap location, Shelby rear light chrome bezels not painted, antenna is still there etc. .you get the picture.

this exmple isn't movie correct either but it's damn fine!

G'day mate ! Not only is EVERYTHING on the car wrong, the car itself is JUST WRONG !! 89,000 dollars ? I'd give maybe 100 dollars......... to have it towed off my property ! Do not waste your hard earned money on this poor excuse for a GT-500 E,or would that be a GT-350 E,or the debachery of nice '67 fastback mustang that could have and should have been restored properly.

Re: Help with 1967 GT500 purchase

Many people have different interpretations of what a Shelby Mustang is, and question what is an Eleanor. They are two different animals. The Eleanor is not and does not represent itself as a Shelby.

My car is an Eleanor first. However, I have more original Shelby authorized parts on my car than the original Shelby's ever had. Which one has a Shelby aluminum 427FE engine? (only one, but it was a ford block, not Shelby, mine is Shelby), Shelby center console, Shelby 200mph gauges, Shelby pedals (clutch, brake and gas), Shelby floor mats, and a Shelby car cover, too. ha ha

I love the authentic Shelby Mustangs. There will be nothing that will ever replace them. If I had one, I would not bastardize it with replacement parts. But while I cherish them, I want more.

I thought quite a few of the GT500 E cars that came out of Unique had 427 Shelby aluminum Fe engines? I am not aware of any vintage Shelby's with a factory 427 aluminum block. The 67 GT500 supersnake had a GT40 light weight engine which was a cast iron block . The major aluminum items were heads ,single four intake, waterpump and balancer. There were 3 GT500's that had the factory lightweight engine including the 67 GT500 supersnake. But there is only one 67 GT500 supersnake. The Cobra that had a aluminum block was a special 390 casting. The best of luck with your registry.

Bob,

Unique Performance had authorization to deliver 75 Super Snakes with 427FE Shelby aluminum Blocks. I have heard (and hearsay is only what it is worth) that only 14 were built. I think you are right, the ONLY true 1967 Shelby Super Snake had a side oiler, but it was a cast iron block. To my knowledge, there was never an aluminum block. And the block was not built by Carroll. Mine is.

I will never think that my car is in the realm of the originals Shelby Mustangs. But it is different? Yes! Worth more? I don't know.

Thank you for your kind words.

There is a real 67 GT 500 with a Shelby 427 aluminum engine. It belongs to my son and it won the Shelby class of the NPD show in Florida.

1967 GT 500 Aluminum Shelby 427

Frank,

Carroll Shelby NEVER built a 427 ALUMINUM engine until 2004 or 2005. If your car was built in 1967 and has not been changed, it is a cast block. That picture is one of his new 427 engines.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but it is not original. Just like mine, a remake. Nice car though!

Re: Help with 1967 GT500 purchase

It's real, I put the engine in it. This one is a real 1967 Shelby GT 500 also. It is the lowest mile 67 GT 500 in the world with 4600 miles, that's 4600, not thousand. It has a 427 tunnel port.
Frank

Here's some more of my cars.

Frank [quote] Frank ,you have a nice collection and sounds like a very low mileage 67. I think the point that was trying to be made was the factory never installed the 427 in your car . Your car was " owner modified ". FYI the original Ford mfg 427 aluminum blocks from back in the 60's were extremely rare and not engineered well that is why you did not see them in the racing GT40's ,stock cars etc. It wasn't until the recent past that Dove and other aftermarket vendors came up with a recent usable alternative. The new Shelby block is another new to the aftermarket aluminum block.

Re: Help with 1967 GT500 purchase

Bob Gaines----I am very aware of when the aluminum 427 blocks became available. I had been racing 427 Fords since 1963. Actually the Shelby block was the first aluminum one available in 1997. Long before Pond or Genesis. I just wanted this fellow to know that there is a real 1967 GT 500 with a Shelby aluminum block. It also has the Shelby stage11 medium riser heads.
