rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

What are the determining factors if a rear shelf is real or not? Is there part numbers in them? stamped? written? Anything at all? I may have found one but i dont know if its real or not. Thanks - Roger

Re: rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

As far as I know, there are no part numbers. I was told the only sure fire way to tell is the fact that these pieces were made by hand laminating the fiberglass into the mold. Chopper guns were not used so back side and underneath looks like large sheets of fiberglass cloth applied in a criss-cross pattern.
Hope that helps
Bill

so all were fiberglass? why is that plastic molded one bid to over 500$ on ebay then, when you can get actual fiberglass ones for 300$ ?

I don't think you will find an original one for $300 unless the seller doesn’t know what he has (wouldn’t be the first time!). I stopped trying to figure out the logic of EBay bidding a long time ago. I attempted to answer your original question with what I have been told. Years ago, a noted Shelby restorer showed me the difference between hand laid up glass shelves and later repo units constructed using a chopper gun.

Re: rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

My bad for mis-leading you, i meant you can get a new repo for 300$, not an original...... So i was wondering what the signifigance of this plastic one was beings it was bid wayy over what a new repo, fiberglass one goes for... I didnt know if one year they switched from fiberglass to plastic like they did with the guage pods or not. - Roger

Re: rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

I think he's wanting to know which is better, reproduction in plastic or reproduction in fibergalss.

Quality may be different in other areas besides material... I have never worked with either of them but hopefully someone on here has fitted both types and can tell you the fit quality.

How they take paint may be a consideration too.

Re: rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

no, i wasnt wondering that, i just wanted to know why that plastic one was so expensive.... i didnt know if they wentfrom fiberglass to plastic shelfs on the left over 65's (66's) or what they did. i now know all of them were fiberglass, and that answers my question. - Roger

Hi,
I think you are talking about the Shelby 66 shelf on ebay
and not a 65 unit.

Re: rear shelf 65 Gt350 question

I have been told by several reputable sources that the aformentioned Ebay part is a correct original vintage part for a 66 Shelby. 65's were different (fiberglass). By the price paid (over $4700), I'm sure the new owner and a few others knew this as well. So the education continues for all of us.
