66 Shelby rear seat belts?

Did 66 Shelbys come standard with rear seat belts? Were they standard or an added option? And if so, were they standard Mustang belts or the 3" competition Ray Brown or American Safety.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

Early cars with overrides did not have rear belts because the anchor nut plates were cut out for the traction bars by Shelby. Later cars had regular belts.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

Not sure if this is true for all cars with override traction. My 6S814 Hertz car has standard Mustang rear belts and overrides. So did #888 which had overrides and was not a Hertz car. I purchased that one from the original owner in 1990.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

This brings up a good point. Things change from car to car. Mine is a two owner 43k mile car #263. They may have changed how they cut the floors for the traction bars or the guys had a bad day cutting mine out.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

Thanks for the replies Guys!
Looks like we're all learning something. These cars have a lot of variable history as 6S263 mentioned, things changed from car to car, or the way each tech installed components.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

Here is even more about this. There were at least two types of seals on the cars that had overrides where they passed thru the floor. One type, on 6S814, had a rubber boot type seal. The boot was held to the floor with a metal frame that was riveted and sealed. On 6S888, there was a fiberglass box mounted on the floor which covered the override bar end that connected under the rear seat.

....and two different types of override bars. Straight and "kinked." Mine are kinked. I think the idea was to give more frame rail clearance.

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

I have a carryover '66 Shelby, #188 and it had no rear seat belts when
purchased. No trace of seat belts having been installed at all. Presume
it came that way from the factory.

this is a 65.... picture of the fiberglass box that covered the holes up..
IIRC the rubber boot was a FORD replacement part the was originally used
on the FORD cab over truck... as the rubber boot for the emegency brake lever...

Re: 66 Shelby rear seat belts?

As a point of reference, I had a 65 Fastback Mustang that had been releatively untouched when I got it. I pulled out the rear seat of the car and found 2 new seat belts with bands around them (as they were probably delivered to Ford) under the seat, but never installed. This was on a Dearborn car, but I read somewhere that rear seatbelt installation was a dealer pre-delivery task that was often not performed. I do wish I had never sold that car.
