well let's see. "How much would you sell your car to me for?" as an owner, you are in a good position. for the guy who wants a Shelby, or is in a Restoration process, it is a very expensive proposition!

It's really too bad that these cars have become untouchable for the average guy. I don't think that's what 'Shel ever intended. $900 for a fuel pump? Was this a legit price, or two guys getting into a bidding war? So, a guy pays that kind of money, then bolts it on his engine. Now what's the value of the fuel pump, and did it increase the value of the car by that much?

Last year I had an 67 427 side oiler rebuildible original carter fuel pump just lying on a shelf were it had been for years. I threw it on E-bay and it brought $247.00 from a guy in Sanfrancisco, and he was thrilled to get it. I guess it only has to be worth alot to 2 people to get a bidding war going. I was only hoping to get a few bucks out of it.

I talked to a dealer today that was real happy to have bought a 67 GT 350, slime gold-auto, for $ 130,000!!! I don't know where it will end but I don't think I can afford insurance for my 66 anymore!!

How dear is the insurance in the USA?

Over here in Australia it costs me $800 a year to insure my 68GT500 for 150k AUD. Only stipulation is that the car cant be driven to and from work. No special security device required, and if the car gets totalled (heaven forbid)I can keep the wreck.

Just interested to see how the insurance companies over there see the classic market.

Got mine covered for $100,000 US and cost $824.00 per year. No mileage limitation, just can not use for daily driver. Covered through Grundy. Also same as yours no devices and keep the car. Agreed value.

I was going to insure my car through one of the collector car agencies. My Farmers agent wrote the same dolllar value policy for less money.

Thats interesting - pretty close. I expected the insurance over here to be more expensive.

that are insured for only a little more than what you guys are getting one car insured for. You might one to get a quote from Haggerty next time. Just my 2 cents worth and it may not be worth that but I hate to see people throw money away on insurance. Let me know if you need any info.

I would recommend calling Hagerty as well. I also have mine insured for a higer value & am paying less money for my policy. Just my 2 cents worth.....David

When I looked at insuring the Shelby I rang around to all the classic car insurers here in Aust. I was surprised to find out it cost considerably more to
insure than a Falcon GTHO Phase 3 (Australian car) I owned and it was insured for a little more. Maybe because they class the Shelby as an imported car.

Strangely though no isurance company stipulated that I needed some sort of security device for the Shelby. Would have thought that because it is such a rare car here in Aust they would have wanted it virtually bolted to the floor.

For one thing, I am in Michigan which requires catastrophe insurance and no fault.(which means all my auto insurance is much higher than when I lived in Ohio) Also companies like Farmers are usually selling a policy with a $100,000 dollar limit not agreed value. They don't necessarily have to pay you max value when something happens. I had a friend find out the hard way when his Torino Cobra was hit and he had stated value insurance through state farm. Also Grundy has unlimited mileage, so you can do the cruises and hot rod tours and not worry about it.
P.S. I am not an insurance expert so check it out for your self.

Just for the heck of it I did a free qoute with Grundy and said I lived in Ohio. All things identical and the rate was nearly $200.00 per year less. I guess I should have built 5 miles south of where I am.

For the people looking to buy a Shelby/CJ mustang /boss, do your home work.Buy the car you can afford, but relize that the cost to restore a car is what you would have spent in the first place for one that is. With only so many parts available today and more people restoring a car, prices are going up,I reciently spent market value for a completely restored radiator for my KR, yes it was high, and yes it hurt, but that being the only missing piece on this car it was important to buy it , and I was lucky to find it.
Just remember the saying, you get what you pay for, some of us were lucky to buy while the prices were low and cars still had most, if not all the hard pieces in tact. I often have buyers over to my house to show and explain what is involved to restore one of these cars today,usally an eye opener.to those that are just happy to own a piece of history, that's ok too, Is is one great thing about our cars.

In Michigan you are required to cover all accident related medical expenses, up to 3 years lost wages and one million dollars of personal property damage coverage. That personal property damage is for fences, buildings etc. All this coverage is on top of your normal auto insurance (collision, liability, comprehensive etc.)other states have. My agent called it catastrophe insurance. I am not saying it is bad to have all this coverage, just more expensive than many other states and can really ad up when you have several car covered.
